They are now all pure cosmetics as well – a smart separation of form and function means picking the skills and abilities you equip are separate from your choice of suit.

As Peter and Miles attempt to stop Venom, Peter is debilitated by a trace amount of the symbiote still within him. After Miles settles his differences with Li, the latter uses his powers to convert Peter’s symbiote traces into the Anti-Venom Symbiote and becoming him into Anti-Venom Spider-Man, which can destroy other symbiotes. Concurrently, Venom recovers the meteorite that originally brought him to Earth and empowers himself with it, accelerating his infestation on New York.

I’m The Hero Here

The majority of the side activities wind up feeling both mechanically and narratively pointless. An electric bike race feels silly enough in a Spider-Man game, but when the stakes are just “I need someone to try out my electric bike”, it’s hard not to think Miles and Peter have more pressing stuff to be getting on with. Far too much of what you’re doing feels like padding from the early days of open world games—there’s more inspiration here from Crackdown than there is from GTA V.

With these settings, players can use higher-quality raytracing meshes and use the raytracing object range slider to make adjustments. Movement is handled very similarly to the previous games in the series. Using their web shooters, the protagonists can swing between and above buildings while performing aerial acrobatics. Though the movement system is built upon the foundations from the previous installments, there are some new features as well. One of them is the ability to glide – after launching themselves into the air, Peter and Miles can cover long distances without needing to keep using their webs. They can use aerodynamic tunnels scattered throughout New York to do so.

Of course, a hero is nothing without its villains, and Spider-Man’s rogues gallery is almost unparalleled. Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve. I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series.

We Are Venom

Tempted by the power and freedom of his new abilities, Miles must decide what kind of Spider-Man he wants to be. Just a day before launch, on Jan. 29, Sony issued a statement saying that certain single-player games would no longer require a PSN account to play on PC. There is also a variety of side characters that will pop up throughout the adventure. If you’re on the fence about picking up the game or starting the franchise in general, this list may be of help to you. I break down what I believe to be the game’s five biggest strengths and five biggest weaknesses.
