I’ve always kind of been lukewarm on Souls multiplayer, and Demon’s Souls is no exception. What’s clever about this is that Demon’s Souls’ structure makes every playthrough feel different because you’re able to approach each world in new ways. For my first playthrough, I went with a magic-focused build and went to world 3 first so I could stock up on magic-replenishing consumables and unlock the NPC that grants access to the most powerful spells. But in my second playthrough with a more dexterity-driven character I bounced from world to world, picking up useful items and gear from each one before committing to beating any of them.

Yet, it’s that very quality that raises questions about whether or not Bluepoint really maximized its opportunities with this remake. At the heart of most Souslike games is a trial and error component which rewards persistence and forces you to learn the language of every encounter in order to survive. It’s a better representation of the ways that the genre’s challenges so often come down to your ability to recognize and execute on an opportunity. Moving to the dual-wielded weapons, the character equips War Pick and Spiked Shield as primary weapons and Secret Dagger and Talisman of Beasts as secondary. Some people don’t have the patience to put enough time into Demon’s Souls to really get anything out of it, but those who avoid playing it out of fear that it may be too difficult should reconsider. There are countless Demon’s Souls guides online that will help players understand everything that’s going on, and there are many ways to make the game more forgiving. For example, there’s almost always a way to make Demon’s Souls boss fights a little easier, like figuring out a weakness to exploit or getting help from random players in the co-op mode.

Tackling the Archdemons in a different order can have a transformative impact on the overall experience, either in NG+ or from an entirely blank slate, as this influences progression and gear. The same can be said for exploring each region in a different order. Sony has basically confirmed this at the end of the latest trailer for Demon’s Souls Remake. As we can clearly see, the company states that the game will be available on the PC. However, the PC version may not release alongside its PS5 version.

The clothes portion comes with a huge cape, which is pretty darn cool and helps your character stand out. Whenever I felt that Demon’s Souls could have done more, though, I remembered the Old Monk boss fight. See, the Old Monk is a unique boss in Demon’s Souls which can actually be controlled by another player if they invade your world at the right time. It’s a brilliant use of the series’ PvP mechanics that has been incredibly difficult to properly experience in the years since Demon’s Souls‘ official servers went offline. Well, the remake lets you experience the proper version of the Old Monk boss fight, which also benefits from better visuals, enhanced controls, and a crystal clear soundtrack.

While these overhauls are impressive, it’s important to recognize that most of the game’s code has gone unchanged. Enemy AI hasn’t been tweaked at all so if you are a veteran who has gone through Demon’s Souls before, you can expect a lot of the same strategies and builds to work, barring glitches and exploits, which have been fixed. However, combat is the name of the game and if you’ve played Dark Souls or any of its sequels, you know what you’re in for.

Walking straight and turning on the narrow beams can be made simpler by using a bow in sniper mode. Most notable, though, is the way the haptics react to you being hit. I need to give a special mention as well to the new ability to send items to your storage box without having to return to the Nexus. And then you’d also have to trek back to the archstone just so you could offload any unnecessary items. This is an elegant fix that still keeps the inventory management without any of the frustration. With the release of the new version, new Weapons, Armor  and Consumables have been added to the game.

Demon’s Souls is known for its tough boss fights, but there are handy methods to tackle each battle that can erase its difficulty. The gameplay trailer shown off during September’s PS5 showcase was a beautiful demonstration of how Demon’s Souls will look and play on the PS5. It’s looking pretty amazing, so it’s even more disappointing that Sony retracted the PC announcement. It’s all about learning enemy patterns and learning the environments, knowing in combat when to challenge yourself with that risk and reward combat system, when to go in and attack and when to pull back and defend. The Gloom Armor set is a heavy armor that can be gained by defeating Yurt, the Silent Chief. The armor itself has a dark brandishing, perfect for those who want to achieve a darker character design.

The music of Demon’s Souls has always been the best of any Souls game to date, and this still holds true in the Remake. You simply won’t find better boss music anywhere in the gaming industry than Demon’s Souls. Demon’s Souls takes place across 5 distinctive locations, represented by 5 Archstones, each with their own NPCs and lore. These worlds feel huge, and the levels themselves sprawling with lots to explore and secrets to find. The worst part about this is that Demon’s Souls has PvP as well, meaning that people who pre-ordered the game or paid for the DLC would have an unfair advantage over other players as well, which is just ridiculous. While one might argue that this actually added to the mysterious nature of the game, the act of watching NPCs talk still feels like a definite upgrade that all future From Software games should definitely adopt.
