The platform design is rarely all that inspired though and we’re still very disappointed that all the enemies are direct rip-offs of Mario enemies, even relatively obscure ones like Pokey and Wiggler. The latest PlayStation mascot showed off its capabilities while being a fun little game all on its own. I had a bunch of games and PS+ when I got my PS5 but I still played through 100% of this and got the Platinum before I even got to any of them. This guide shows the location of the Special bot in the Memory Meadow area in Astro’s Playroom. This was the fourth and final hidden bot that the developers have been sequentially releasing before the release of the Astro Bot game on 6th Sep 2024. There are small animals such as crabs, rabbits, and toucans that can be found throughout Astro’s Playroom.
Before we get to that, we’ll first need to find the GT driver’s artifact. From here, jump over to the wooden platform up the tree, cross over the DualShock Cable to another platform, then defeat the Spiky on it. Every single device, or UMD or game disc, is lovingly crafted right down to the movable thumbsticks of a controller, or the input and output ports on the back of a console.
Astro’s Playroom could easily have been a simple tech demo, and in a way it is that. Its main function is to demonstrate the possibilities of the DualSense. It’s the kind of charming 3D adventure rarely seen outside of Nintendo, one dripping with inventive ideas and heartwarming details. And it might just be the ideal game to sell you on a PlayStation 5. Upon jumping into the Cooling Springs level, I didn’t have to play long before feeling just how next-gen this controller is. Walking on the sand in this level provides feedback in the controller that actually feels like you’re on sand. Later in the level you’ll be in a frog robot suit equipped with a spring on the bottom of it. By holding the R2 trigger down you’ll press that spring down to jump and as you are doing it you feel the resistance in the trigger.
For example‚ punching a bush in the GPU Jungle reveals the Selen bot from Returnal. These hidden characters are tied to PlayStation history and unlock unique trophies. Rescuing all four special bots rewards you with the “Four The Players” trophy‚ adding a layer of challenge and nostalgia to your platinum journey.
The cameos are plentiful and amusing, with franchises that go beyond the first-party catalogue, along with some surprisingly deep cuts that made me feel very old. But in the midst of all that history, Astro feels like an adorably fresh face; I’m glad to see the character break out of the confines of VR and reach out to a broader audience. Astro’s Playroom may not be the deepest or most ambitious game on PS5, but its humor and playfulness are just delightful.
